Master of Science Program in Mathematics for Educators (MAED)

Mathematics is vital for developing a deep understanding of quantitative concepts and enhancing logical reasoning skills. It serves as a robust and powerful tool across various fields including science, engineering, and finance. The MSc program is designed specifically to enrich the knowledge of mathematics educators, focusing particularly on secondary school teachers and tutors from educational institutes. We aim to deepen their mathematical understanding, empowering them to inspire and educate future generations with greater effectiveness. 

Strengths of the MAED Program

The HKUST Mathematics Department excels in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Statistics/Financial Mathematics. The program broadens and deepens educators’ appreciation and comprehension of mathematics, enhancing their teaching abilities. The courses of the program cover topics ranging from number theory and combinatorics to geometry, to frontiers in application of mathematics, to training in mathematics problem-solving. They promote student intellectual development and teaching craft, and they provide a basis for student achievement of academic and professional goals.

Program

• Duration:
  
  The program is offered in both full-time and part-time modes. The normal completion period is one year in full-time mode and   two years in part-time mode.

• Program Fee:
  
  The program Fee for the 2027/28 intake is HK$175,000 for 27 credits. This applies to both full-time and part-time students. Students who wish to enroll for extra credits or need to retake any courses in the program are required to pay an extra fee of  HK$6,481 per credit.

• Admission Requirements:
  
  A Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics or a related Science or Engineering field. Students are generally expected to have knowledge in the subjects: (i) Multivariable Calculus, (ii) Linear Algebra, and (iii) Differential Equations. 

• English Language Admission Requirements:
  Applicants have to fulfill English Language requirements with one of the following proficiency attainments: 
  • TOEFL-iBT: 80 (for tests taken prior to 21 January 2026) *
                              4.5 (for tests taken from 21 January 2026 onwards) *
  • TOEFL-pBT: 550
  • TOEFL-Revised paper-delivered test: 60 (total scores for Reading, Listening and Writing sections)
  • IELTS (Academic Module): Overall score: 6.5, and All sub-score: 5.5*
  * Refers to scores in one single attempt only. Test at home option is not accepted.

• Graduation Requirements:
  
  A student must complete the program with a graduation grade average (GGA) of 2.850 or above, as required of all postgraduate students at the University.

• Application:
  Applications for admission to the 2027/2028 intake can be submitted starting on 1 September 2026. 

• Application Procedures:
  
  Apply online before the application deadlines. A personal statement by the applicant explaining their reasons for enrolling in the MAED Program is required as part of the application. The application fee is HK$500.

• Credit Transfer
  
  Subject to the approval of the Program Director and the University regulations governing credit transfer, a maximum of 6 credits can be transferred to the program.

• Remarks
  Part-time students may take a maximum of 9 credits in each term.
