Title: What is Noncommutative Geometry?

Speaker: Ivan IP, Yale University
Location: 215 LOM
Abstract:
This will be an elementary introduction to the elements of noncommutative geometry in Alain Connes' Picture. The basic theorem of Gelfand and Naimark states that the category of (compact) topological space is equivalent to the category of commutative (unital) C*-algebra. By considering "noncommutative C*-algebra", we would like to obtain analogs of geometric results. In the talk I will describe the various correspondences between the geometric and algebraic objects, and try to give an overview of NC Index Theory and Connes' Spectral Triples if time permits.
