Mathematics is an indispensable subject for quantitative understanding and logical thinking. It is employed as a formidable and powerful tool in science, engineering, and finance, and as such, the learning and teaching of mathematics is of vital importance. The aim of the Master of Science in Mathematics for Educators (MAED) is to enrich a mathematics educator’s knowledge of mathematics. The Master of Science in Mathematics for Educators (MAED) aims to enrich educators’ knowledge of mathematics, particularly benefiting secondary school and tutorial institution teachers. The degree offers:

Strengths of the HKUST MAED Program

The HKUST Mathematics Department excels in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Statistics/Financial Mathematics. The program broadens and deepens educators’ appreciation and comprehension of mathematics, enhancing their teaching abilities. The courses of the program cover topics ranging from number theory and combinatorics to geometry, to frontiers in application of mathematics, to training in mathematics problem-solving. They promote student intellectual development and teaching craft, and they provide a basis for student achievement of academic and professional goals.

Program

• Duration:
  The program is offered in both full-time and part-time modes. The normal completion period is one year in full-time mode and two years in part-time mode.

• Program Fee:
  The program Fee for the 2025/26 intake:
• Local students: HK$130,000
• Non-local students: HK$130,000 

• Admission Requirements:
  A Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics or a related Science or Engineering field. Students are generally expected to have knowledge in the subjects: (i) Multivariable Calculus, (ii) Linear Algebra, and (iii) Differential Equations. 

• English Language Admission Requirements:
  Applicants have to fulfill English Language requirements with one of the following proficiency attainments: 
  • TOEFL-iBT: 80*
  • TOEFL-pBT: 550
  • IELTS (Academic Module): Overall score: 6.5, and All sub-score: 5.5*
  * refers to the total score in one single attempt

• Graduation Requirements:
  A student must complete the program with a graduation grade average (GGA) of 2.850 or above, as required of all postgraduate students at the University.

• Application:
  Applications for admission to the 2025/2026 intake can be submitted starting on 2 September 2024. 

• Application Procedures:
  Apply online before the application deadlines. A personal statement by the applicant explaining their reasons for enrolling in the MAED Program is required as part of the application. The application fee is HK$250.


• Application deadline for 2025/26 Fall Term Intake (commencing in Sep 2025):
  Non-local Applicants: 01 June 2025
  Local Applicants: 15 July 2025

         * Students may take MAED 6981 for once, with a maximum of 3 credits.

• Credit Transfer
  Credit transfer may be granted to a student in recognition of equivalent courses successfully completed elsewhere. Subject to approval by the Program Director, and University regulations, a maximum of 6 credits can be transferred.

• Remarks
  Part-time students may take a maximum of 9 credits in each term.
