Prof. Xu graduated from Peking University in 1987. In 1988, he entered Columbia University through the China-US Physics Examination and Application (CUSPEA) program and obtained his doctoral degree in 1993. After completing his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton University. He joined HKUST in 1996 and is currently a Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics.
Prof. Xu’s research primarily focuses on the development of numerical algorithms for computational fluid dynamics. Over the past thirty years, he has progressively developed the gas-kinetic scheme (GKS), the unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS), and the unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method, which are now routinely used to simulate both rarefied and continuum flows. The direct modeling framework he established has been successfully applied to multiscale transport problems in areas such as rarefied gas dynamics, radiation, neutron transport, plasma, and gas-solid particle two-phase flows. The GKS, UGKS, and UGKWP methods have also been further developed and implemented in the Aries software by Suochen Company.
Currently, Prof. Xu serves as Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Aerodynamics, and as an Associate Editor for Communications in Computational Physics, International Journal of Computational Fluid Dynamics, and Computers and Fluids.
