Prof Xu graduated from Peking University in 1987. In 1988, he entered Columbia University through the China-US Physics Examination and Application program (CUSPEA) and obtained Doctoral degree in 1993. After PhD, he served as a post-doctoral researcher at Princeton University. He joined HKUST in 1996 and is currently chair professor and department head of Mathematics Department. His research mainly concentrates on the numerical algorithm development for computational fluid dynamics. The gas-kinetic schemes (GKS), unified GKS (UGKS), and unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method developed progressively in the past thirty years have been routinely used for the computation of rarefied and continuum flow. The framework of direct modeling is successfully applied to the computation of multlscale transport in rarefied gas, radiation, neutron, plasma, and gas-solid particle two phase flow. Currently, he serves editor in chief for Advances in Aerodynamics, and associated editors for Communications in Computational Physics, International Journal of Computational Fluid Dynamics, and Computers and Fluids.
